BSF 2025: Germany Weiss Schwarz Tournament Report

This was our second Summerfest of the season, but I didn’t make a post for Italy because it ended up with such low attendance that it got converted to a 12 player singles event. Germany didn’t fare much better, especially compared to last year when we had 34 teams, but that was to be expected when they put the event on the same weekend as Dokomi (Germany’s biggest anime con). Still, it was a fun little event and I had a good time!

The Team

I’ve been on I-No for over a year and half now, and that’s not going anywhere until I get the new Bang Dream set in my hands – and even then, only reluctantly πŸ™‚ I still really love the deck, and I think the Nagoriyuki Choice build is extremely consistent and reliable by giving you access to the 1/0 Brainstorm Event in yellow for that sweet, sweet costless mill. And Millia can grab the event from clock too. And Nagoriyuki is conveniently 6k cross turn in a deck that already runs multiple 2k level 1 backups anyway. Very comfy deck all around! Denis went with the Moona finisher this time because the opponents take the 4 eventually (that’s just the rule of Weiss) and we gave Filip my Macross cards (but not my build, I hate the Link deck with a passion, it’s too much effort for me).

I sit down round 1 and I see Slime: that’s fine, I have extensive Slime experience. Opponent mulligans the Milim CX: that’s fine too, I don’t really need early game backrow cards. But then I canceled a bit at level 0, and Guilty Gear has like no offensive power at that point: my best card for reversing L0 stuff is the 3k cleancut. And in any other matchup, going helmet – cleancut – cleancut with two reverses would be a pretty solid line, but in this matchup, my backrow got nuked the next turn by Milim anyway. Oh well, at least I didn’t give my opponent a free +2 by not reversing their level 0s the turn before.

Between canceling and triggering some climaxes, I ended up seeing none in my hand by level 1, so I couldn’t do the combo. But I did get the Grappling Hook which can bounce the whole front row if it’s frontal attacked and I have a CX on top of my deck, and I was still 2 in 7 before attacks, so I just put down two Nagoriyukis and this, and hoped for the best. Didn’t trigger any climaxes that turn, so we were down to 2 in 4. I canceled the first attack on the second card, and then I think my opponent thought I hadn’t paid all my climaxes out yet, so he fronted the Grappling Hook, and I revealed a CX off the top. I’ll take a free +3 any day of the week, thank you very much!

I still got pushed to level 2 with the last attack, but now I had ample ditch fodder to throw around with helmets to get enough pieces for double I-No, and my opponent went straight from 1-5 to level 3. If I had a nickel for every time Slime only got to do Mjurran against me at level 3 during regionals, I’d have two nickels now across two circuits. Anyone volunteering to be a victim next BCS season?

I actually had a lot of fun playing against Bunny Girl with Macross (specifically this build) because the 3.5k Mikumo plays are just so good against a row of 3.5k Mais. Slam a 1k1 climax, reverse the bunnies, as long as you keep hitting the mills on the Mikumo you don’t even have to clock, just loop the 2/0 Mikumo combo and whatever it takes to grab the next CX. I-No, on the other hand … doesn’t have that good of a time against this deck.

I’m not saying it’s a doomed or even particularly bad matchup, I’m just saying that I’ve had 4 losses across two events this season, and all four were against Bunny Girl πŸ™‚

Not knowing what their power lines will be at level 1 is very annoying if I wanna go for backup plays, so I’m either sitting there with useless backups or without backups that could have been very useful. I try to play with the assumption that they’ll be able to reverse me, and I guess that works out fine overall. AndΒ technically I think the matchup can be swung in my favor a lot of the times with the Bridget freefresh counter, but you know … the game kinda has to be going at least marginally fine for that option to be on the table. If I open by triggering two doors like I did in this round, the game is NOT going fine at all! Because yes, I can pay that out, but them I’m two stock short on what I would have had otherwise, and in most games that might not matter because the I-No package is so cheap, but if the 3 stock freefresh is a key thing in the matchup, then hoarding stock is equally important. Still, I valued paying out those climaxes more, and I still think it was probably the right choice.

I can’t exactly remember how the game ended, but I think none of the mills hit until maybe the last one, where it didn’t even matter because I was dying to refresh penalty anyway.

Round 3

Modernia/Biscuit 8 Door

I could complain about the fact that I wanted to farm Nikke and they keep dodging me somehow, but I’ll just be grateful that I was spared the bunnies this time. I think Hololive in general is a very comfy matchup for me, mostly because I’m very familiar with it. The 2/1 Botan early play bottom deck bomb is slightly annoying in the blue builds, and the 2/1 Anya is even more annoying in the red builds because both can dismantle I-No boards, but as long as I know to expect that, it’s usually perfectly fine. And this game wasn’t just fine, it was super in my favor because I was still at 2-2 when the opponent was going for his finishing turn, and Marine just doesn’t reach that far. I had to cancel one instance of damage, I canceled 3 out of 5 just for good measure.

Damn bunnies at it again, idk man. I’d rather be anywhere else than sitting across a Bunny Girl deck this season, AND YET they are on me like moths to a flame.

To sum up the round 2 recap, I can do fine against Bunny if the game is going fine. My deck’s idea of ‘game going fine’ this round: two doors in opening hand, another door on mulligan. Lovely! Between that and some unfortunate triggers later in the game, I went down like a sack of shit, but luckily Filip carried us through to top cut. We were 3rd after Swiss!

I was waiting all day for this moment basically. I love the Nikke matchup because my current deck is absolutely perfect for it. At least one or two Modernias are usually swinging at just 7k, so 6k + 2k backup beats over them. Depending on the board state, the same backup can also be enough to stop the Alice early play from reversing I-No, and then the Sol Hexproof assist means they can’t rest it with the 3/2 Sin even if it does live. Same for their stupid cheap rest counter!

And speaking of stupid, this game was a friendly clusterfuck πŸ™‚ Including but not limited to:

  • me misunderstanding the green L0 anti-move and thinking it’s for the character across, not choosing a character, thus a judge had to step in when the opponent tried to freeze my hexproof I-No,
  • me flipping over my entire 4 card deck by accident when I was moving the Happy Chaos and Asuka backup to waiting room for the I-No change (judge warning obtained succesfully!),
  • and my opponent trying to use the rest counter on a hexproof I-No on my final turn.

He also didn’t see the Modernia door until very late game, and there were two separate times when he was very compressed … but not for long. Needless to say I capitalized on everything to my deck’s content.

This was a rematch from round 2 of swiss, the team that we already lost to once. But at least I got to end my day with Bunny Girl redemption!

This time it was my opponent having a bad game, with his level 1 combo turn consisting of one brainstorm in the back and two attackers: a Mai that didn’t have enough power to reverse Nagoriyuki because there was no Riki in memory, and a Riki that couldn’t attack and go to memory first, because then Mai would wiff the 2 or more other characters requirement. After that, I was able to put on just enough pressure with I-No so that there was no time to properly recover, and that won me the game.

It’s unfortunate that my teammates lost all of their top cut games, but oh well – it do be like that sometimes. And I can’t complain, I got carried to top cut in the first place πŸ™‚

Closing Thoughts

Deck is fine. Deck is good. I’m taking it to the Hungary Summerfest next month as well.

I am currently 2 for 2 in going undefeated in a Munich trios top cut, so I guess that’s an interesting fact.

I want to thank all my opponents for the games, as well as judges and the event staff for making the event happen! The prize support for this Summerfest may be ass, but the people are top notch as always β™₯

As for my teammates, I hope we have another fun run in in July before calling it quits for the season! If we do something worth writing about, I’ll make another tournament report, but either way I have a Guilty Gear deck retrospective in the works too.

However, what IS certain is that there will at least be a travel vlog for our Hungary trip, because we’re doing them for every Summerfest we go to this year. You can already watch the Italy vlog on my YouTube, and the Germany vlog is currently out in early access for my Patrons! It’ll be on YouTube for everyone else in a few days, but if you want to see the trip early and get yourself a spot on the list of Patrons for the Hungary vlog next month, check out my Patreon page πŸ’Έ

Update: Germany vlog is out for everyone now! Enjoy πŸ™‚
